Halloween Costume Ideas

Greetings! Everyone seems to enjoy dressing up for parties, special get together and of course for Halloween. I sometimes find it hard to decide on what to be at Halloween. There are so many really neat ideas for costumes. If you would like to see your ideas listed please email me and I'll be happy to add it. Have fun picking out your favorite costume. Happy Halloween!

I have come up with a list of suggestions for costumes that hopefully are easy to do or purchase. It seems costumes can get rather pricey real fast. If you can't afford purchasing a costume one possibility is renting new costumes. There are places you can go too. I have found if your like me the budget doesn't always allow buying new  costumes (especially for kids when their always growing). I hope maybe some of my ideas will spur some of your own creative powers and come up with some of your own wonderful ideas for costumes. Have fun creating and going through your own trunk of treasures.

Costumes Ideas:

The Great Pumpkin -- I have seen patterns at the fabric store. You would need to get orange fabric and whatever the pattern calls for.  You could hear a hat that looks like a pumpkin top. If you could find orange tights or pants that would help to stay warm. If a child is using a sewing machine please have adult supervision.

Charlie Brown -- If you have a sibling or good friend that you want to go trick or treating or to a party with one; then one of you can go as the Great Pumpkin and the other as Charlie Brown. Charlie Brown is always looking for the Great Pumpkin.

M&M's -- You could make a specific colored M&M or dress up as a bag of M&M's that would go over your clothes.

Hobo/Bum -- Get some old and worn baggie jeans or overalls. Plus an old flannel / shirt with patches. If jeans are used then you could use suspenders to hold them up. Old holey shoes would be neat. Some black makeup for cheeks would be cool. Find a neat old stick that you could tie a bandana to the end to carry your hobo belongings in.

Fake Teeth! I have found the coolest fake teeth on the net! In fact I have 2 friends that have bought some and they are very real looking. In fact I have ordered me some. I have tried them out. They are very comfortable. In fact I dressed up as a hill billy. I wore the teeth. This lady came in to work to visit someone and tried not to stare at me. She thought they were my real teeth. She finally asked me about my teeth. I indicated they were fake. She really didn't believe me. I had to remove them in front of her to prove they weren't mine. She really laughed and thought they were great because they had tricked her. The employees in the building gave me a hard time all day by saying "I can recommend a good dentist" or "So you don't have a dental plan! I can suggest one." These teeth would make the perfect accessories for a bum costume or hill billy costume. Please visit Billy Bob Teeth for your perfect set of teeth for that special touch when you want to look your best! I highly recommend them. Please children ask a parent before buying or trying the teeth.

Hippie -- Faded blue jeans great if holey in places . A tie dye t-shirt with bright colors. Another type shirt they wore was a plain t-shirt that was cut from the bottom up to about half way into individual strands so beads could be attacked to each strand. Or they wore half shirts and vests. Long hair was the thing. People wore flowers in their hair. Could make a flower wreath with ribbons hanging off of it for a head piece. They also wore the black sunglasses like what the Beetles wore. Some drew the peace signs on their jeans or shirts. Bead necklaces were a big hit as an accessory.

Cowboy or Cowgirl -- Jeans or denim skirt, a western type shirt, cowboy boots, a cowboy hat and a bandana in your pocket or around your neck. If you have spurs that fit your boots you can use these as well. You could cut a small piece of rope (enough to make in a circle 2-3 times) for a lasso.

Sheriff -- If you have the clothes to be a cowboy all you would need to have is a Sheriff's Badge.

Black Cat -- All you need is a black shirt and pants or tights. Attack a black cat tail to the back side of your pants. Have the ears on a head band. You can use black makeup to paint on a black tip for a nose and of course don't forget the whiskers. The tail, ears and black makeup are items you can buy at a local costume shop.

Bunny Rabbit -- Purchase white ears and fluffy white tail. You can wear all white or light pink clothes and attack the bunny tail in the appropriate place. Have face makeup so you can have a cute little nose and whiskers. I have also seen various forms of rabbit masks at the costume shop.

Magician -- You will want a black cape, black top hat and magic wand. As far as the clothes go it would look best with a white shirt and black pants under the cape. Dressier type shoes are best. If you may want to learn a magic trick or two to do with your hat that would be great.

Cheerleader -- You could use a short skirt with a leotard that matches a color in the skirt. You can buy pom pom's at a costume shop that are color coordinated. Some girls put their hair up in a ponytail. In the way of shoes some might wear saddle oxfords.

Roaring 20's Girl -- You can wear a flapper dress, high heals, a hat with a feather and maybe even a feather boa that matches your dress.

High School Jock -- Okays guys you'll want to slick your hair back. Baggy slacks with pleats in the front and of course a Letterman's Sweater. If you have a class ring that would add to the outfit as well. Cool shoes as well.

High School Sweetheart -- You could wear a poodle skirt, with a leotard and a scarf around your neck. Of course, the in thing was saddle oxford shoes with socks down around your ankles. Your hair was usually up in a pony tail. You could wear your boyfriends class ring on a chain around your neck. Another thing to wear is your boyfriends letterman sweater.

Bowler -- You could wear your bowling shirt with a pair of slacks. Of course you will want to wear an old pair of bowling shoes. Use your bowling bag to collect your candy in. Oh don't forget your bowler hand towel.

Box of Cereal or Favorite Breakfast Food -- Use cardboard to create the box. Use colored markers, crayons or paint to create your food label on the box. Cut a hole in the box top for your head to go through as well as holes in the sides for your arms. Wear whatever is comfortable underneath. You could carry a milk jug to collect your candy in.

Toilet Bowl -- Cut card board box to fit the top half of the body to look like the tank. There should be a place for the arms to come out on the sides. Of course there is hole on the top so your head can go threw. Cut a large plastic bowl so it will fit into the cardboard tank (the side next to the tank needs to be flat). Of course you can have a lid on the toilet so when your child goes trick or treating the candy goes in the toilet bowl and it is covered. I saw this costume on a child one time at my door and it was really cute. Oh, don't forget the handle on the tank. Unfortunately this toilet won't flush the candy away!

Car -- Now here's an idea for those folks in a wheel chair. I've seen this done. It was great! Get a large cardboard box. Cut half circles out for the wheels of your wheel chair. Then cut out sections for the door windows on the sides. Don't forget to cut out the windshield. Using either paint or color crayons make the outside of the box to look like a vehicle. Once its all made to look like a car set the box over the wheel chair so it looks like the person is in a car. Attach the box to the chair so it doesn't come off during operation yet is doesn't harm the chair. Please keep safety in mind when doing this project. The person in the wheel chair can have a cute horn inside with them and once in awhile they could honk their horn.

Angels -- This is cute for little girls. Put a long white dress on them. Attach some angel wings on the back and a halo and you have a angel. Oh, don't forget the wand. The wings and halo you can buy or if you are creative you can make them. Get some white or soft pink netting, thin wire and glitter. Form the wire to look like wings, attach the netting just around the edges with glue or tack down in places. Apply little glitter. Attach to dress.

Grim Reaper -- All you really need is to wear is a black shirt, black pants and a black cape. If your good with face makeup than you can paint your face up other wise just buy a mask at the costume shop.

Dracula -- Again you can wear the same as the Grim Reaper but paint your face to look like Dracula and insert some fangs.

Medieval or Renaissance Garb -- Depending on the period you choose your clothes they can be anything from quite elegant to the local poverty stricken maiden. Here are a couple of places you can check out clothes and learn about the period they come from -- The Costume Page or The SCA. You can also visit you local fabric shop to purchase patterns and fabric if your into sewing.

Thrift Stores -- Shop at your local thrift store. Once you have figured out some possible ideas who knows what you will find there. A lot of times kids are in plays, ballet recitals or dance classes and need a certain costume; they out grow it so fast it goes to the local thrift store. Old dresses or men's sport coats are great to dress up as an old woman or man. Be creative and have fun!

Party Ideas for adults? I have one. How about Hosting Your Own Murder Mystery Dinner or Party! Dinner doesn't need to included in the party. I have gone to some local game stores and they sell several different types of Murder Mystery Role Playing Games. These games contain all the information you need to host a Murder Mystery Party. I have visited with some people that have participated in one of these parties and they really had a good time. The host sent out invitations for a party/dinner party. The guests were to dress in costumes to fit the part which they were to wear upon arriving for the party/dinner. Included in the invitations is a description from the game of a certain character that the host had selected for that guest to portray and act out. Of course, the house was usually decorated and dinner if served was great! They all really enjoyed the party. They all had fun playing their part and trying to figure out Who Done It?

Halloween Magazine This site is very informative. Great for parents. It has tips and helpful ideas.

Dream Scream They have over 10,000 costumes to choose from as well as lots of accessories. Get your next costume or accessories' here so the other ghosts and goblins are screaming over how great of a costume you have instead of it being a nightmare!

BuyCostumes.com Here is another cool place to get costumes for Halloween if your not into making them or feel you don't have the time. Happy Halloween!

Taking Great Photos At Halloween -- Have you ever taken photos of some great costumes or a really scary Halloween party then only later to find out they didn't turn out like you had hoped for. Well, here is a place you can go to get some hints and good information on the how to of picture taking. Have fun taking pictures. If you have access to a digital camera then you can view the pictures instantly and not be disappointed later about a certain picture.

A thought to ponder: When wearing a creepy, full mask for Halloween you may want to take a few small breaks from wearing it. These full masks can cause you to get very hot to the point of over heating. Halloween is to be fun and having fun with your friends. Who wants to get sick?
